Holiday drivers feel the pain of increased cost of motoring

May 23, 2008

This bank holiday the AA estimates that 18 million people will take to the roads this bank holiday and with fuel prices on average a quarter higher than last year people will really feel the extra expense.  The AA estimate that it will cost an extra £14 to fill up their tanks.

The AA has joined calls for the Chancellor to delay the 2 pence a litre rise in fuel prices in the Autumn.

A litre of petrol costs an average 114p. Diesel costs 126.4p on average.

The average length of journey put into the AA's route planner website is 304 miles. driving a car with a petrol engine returning 35 mpg the coast of the average journey would be £43.16, if you got the cheapest petrol in the UK (Gateshead 107.9p).  With a diesel engine returning 45 mpg, filled up with the UK's most expensive diesel (138p Hexham) the cost would be virtually identical at £42.93.

the Highways agency has announced that in an attempt to reduce congestion on England's major roads and motorways, it has suspended 18 sets of roadworks until midnight on Monday.

A further 17 sets of roadworks have been completed in time for the weekend.

Let’s hope the chancellor can look to show similar sympathy for motorists by announcing some relief from the current price rises.

In the meantime you can use our guide to driving more economically to help keep fuel bills down as much as possible.
