The search to find Coventry’s Young Driver of the Year is on

April 30, 2008

Today sees the launch of this years Coventry and Warwickshire Young Driver of the Year Competition.  Sponsored by Peugeot for the second year, the competition for top prize of a brand new, taxed and insured, Peugeot 107, looks to be every bit as keenly contested as it was last year.

Unlike many motoring competitions, the winner will not be the person who can complete a course in the quickest possible time, but will be based on a number of different abilities.  Organisers are searching for exceptional young people; drivers aged 17-21 who can show a responsible attitude, a willingness and desire to improve their driving.  They need to have an open attitude to receiving feedback and to learn quickly from the experts in order to have a chance of winning. An assured and confident driving manner, the capability to handle a vehicle under pressure and in challenging environments, and consistently high standards in a range of driving situations will also be judged.

It comes as little surprise that the competition is based on safety and improvement of driving skills as it is run by Warwickshire County and Coventry City Council’s Road Safety Teams.  It also has the support of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, MIRA, and the sponsorship of Peugeot to encourage safe driving practices amongst young people and reduce casualty numbers within this group. In 2006, 25% of car occupants killed on UK roads were aged 17-21, a sobering statistic.

The closing date for entries is September 15 2008.

It is an EU requirement that there are 6 to 8 tread wear bars on all vehicle tyres (except tractors).
