Audi launches 50mpg roadster

February 28, 2008

Audi will unveil it's new 50 MPG plus TT sports car at the Geneva Motor Show. The coupe can reach a top speed of 140mph, with 0-60 figures of just 7.5secs while getting 53.3 miles to the gallon, and emitting 140g/KM of CO2. This isn't a concept car, it will be available to order from March 6th.

The new TT borrows the engine from the acclaimed A4 saloon and squeezes 170 bhp from the two litre powerhouse (up from just 143 bhp for the A4), and an incredible 350Nm maximum torque output, which is more than the 3.5 litre petrol V6.

Audi has invested a lot of time and effort into getting more out of its diesels, as underlined by its back-to-back victories in the Le Mans 24-hour races in 2006 and 2007 with its R10 racer.

Audi has taken common rail diesel to new levels of efficiency and power. Getting technical for a minute, the fuel injection system relies on the engines Electronic Control Unit to generate extremely high pressure in the common fuel rail which supplies fuel to the cylinders. The fuel injectors are also managed by the ECU, which is very frugal and precise with it’s delivery of fuel, providing up to 5 injections of fuel per stroke. This high pressure and precise delivery provides more efficient combustion. This in turn makes the engine quiet and smooth as well as offering stellar fuel figures.

Audi has shown that it can win the worlds toughest motor race with a diesel engine and now its first off the line with a diesel sports car.

Bravo!

Mechanics - When do car tyres need replacing?

It is an EU requirement that there are 6 to 8 tread wear bars on all vehicle tyres (except tractors).
