Toyota develop the first rear window airbag

October 2, 2008

The safety conscious team at Toyota have taken airbags to a new level with their development of the worlds first ‘Rear Window’ Airbag.

The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System), rear window curtain shield airbag is designed to protect rear passengers’ heads in the event of a rear-end collision.

The airbag is deployed from the roof lining above the window, rolling down the rear window like a blind, and shielding the occupants from any intrusion upon a rear-end collision.  Together with the headrests, the airbag Forms a protective barrier to minimise the impact to the head from a colliding vehicle or parts of either vehicle, thus helping to reduce the severity of injuries.

Toyota are looking to include the system in their upcoming “iQ” ultra-compact four-seater and is expected to roughly double the car’s rear passenger head protection performance.

Toyota has continued to actively develop and make available its collision safety technologies – resulting in such achievements as the swift market introduction of SRS curtain shield and knee airbags – to enable its vehicles to better respond to a greater range of accidents.

The system has been developed as part of its efforts to realise sustainable mobility.  The scheme will see Toyota strengthen its traffic safety initiatives in the future through: 1) the development of even safer vehicles and technologies; 2) participation in the creation of a safe traffic environment and 3) activities designed to educate people on traffic safety, thereby contributing to the complete elimination of traffic casualties, which can be viewed as the ultimate hope of a society that values mobility.

Mechanics - When do car tyres need replacing?

It is an EU requirement that there are 6 to 8 tread wear bars on all vehicle tyres (except tractors).
