German car manufacturer Volkswagen have raised the bar for fuel economy with their new Golf Bluemotion.
The frugal Golf is able to achieve a combined 74.3 mpg while emitting just 99 g/km of CO2. This figure matches that of the economy of the Polo Bluemotion, itself a smaller car and one of the most efficient in the UK.
Bluemotion is the label given to each of the most efficient model for every type of car within the VW range. The Golf BlueMotion concept is powered by an efficient and refined 1.6-litre TDI common rail diesel engine. Developing 105 PS and 184 lbs ft of torque at 2,000 rpm the thrifty Golf concept can reach 62 mph from standing in a 11.3 seconds before going on to a top speed of 117 mph. a more than reasonable return for the fuel outlay.
The entire Bluemotion range uses a set of low rolling resistance tyres and optimised aerodynamics with revised ratios in their five speed gearbox in order to keep the emissions low. They also run with a redesigned drivetrain, which transfers the engines power in a more efficient manner, thus using less fuel to drive the car.
The standard non-BlueMotion Golf still offers decent economy standards. The entry-level diesel Golf will be powered by a 2.0-litre TDI 110 PS common rail diesel engine, capable of achieving 62 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 119 g/km of CO2. These figures match the economy of the current Golf BlueMotion model.
With emission figures of 99 g/km the new Golf Bluemotion will fall into the class of VED exempt vehicles.
