US driver smashes into Guinness World records book.

July 25, 2008

When Rhode Island police arrested Stanley Kobierowski, following a drunken smash into a highway message board they realised instantly that he was drunk.  When asked for his drivers licence he handed them a credit card and not with an attempt to bribe them!

When they managed to get him to breathe into their Breathalyser it returned a staggering figure of 0.491 blood alcohol level.  The limit for driving is 0.08, so Stan was six times over the legal limit to drive, and more worryingly, just .009 away from the level which is widely recognized to be fatal (0.5).

US driver smashes into Guinness World records book.

Kobierowski has been released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to attend a hearing today to face charges of drunken driving and resisting arrest. Officers stated that  he had trouble getting out of his seat. Once he stood up they had to hold his arms to take him to the rear of his car.

But as they did so, they claim Kobierowski grabbed onto the car and refused to move, forcing troopers to pick him up and carry him from the lane of traffic into the breakdown lane, where he was unable to carry out any of the sobriety tests.

Many commentators have said that it’s remarkable that he survived the episode, a blood alcohol level of 0.4 is enough to render most people comatose so to be so near to the fatal level and at the wheel of a car is a terrible achievement.
Judges are likely to take a dim view of Kobierowski’s antics and follow a similar line to his employers who have sacked him from his job as a kitchen worker at a Providence restaurant.
