What are with the cup holders?

I went to go and explore the A5 the other weekend as I'm looking to change cars... like the look of them from what I've seen on the road, so thought I'd go to my local garage. Walked into the showroom - sat myself down in one - CUP HOLDERS! Why on earth would anyone put those gastly cup holders in that position...!!!!!!

Yeah they look like the sort of cupholder that you have got in the 80s. Surely they could have made a stow away version.
