The Subaru Impreza's constantly changing looks has kept its fans awaiting each model change with aching anticipation. And each new version succeeds in splitting opinion, especially among the enthusiasts. Those ugly round headlamps introduced on the 2000 model put many people off. But anybody who got behind the wheel was quickly converted as the performance and incredible handling changed hearts and minds around the world.

For some, however, the harsh suspension needed to grip to the road with such ruthlessness was too much, and meant that the top-end sports versions alienated many who wanted a sports car that didn't communicate every bump and ripple in the road directly to your backside.

Well, the latest versions for 2008 will no doubt divide opinions once again, and my feeling is that they will please the ladies but disappoint the enthusiasts.

The new hatchback look was a shock for starters, but personally I like it, although there is still a saloon for those who prefer the traditional shape. But, just as it looks more middle class than its forebears, the interior and ride confirm the more grown-up character of the Subaru WRX of today.

Inside, Subaru has upped the comfort and sophistication levels significantly. Gone are the stark silver plastics and restrictive rear legroom; occupants are now treated to more room in every direction, richly textured surfaces, and seats redesigned to support the entire back. Getting in and out is easier, too; the rear doors now open wider by one full stop and close with a satisfying thunk.

Other conveniences come standard on the WRX, including a tilt-telescoping steering wheel and tire-pressure-monitoring, and VDC systems. But the really cool feature is Subaru's hill-start assist. This electronic system engages the brakes for one second while the WRX is stopped on an incline, just enough time to move your foot from the brake to the gas without fear of a clutch-burning rollback.

The Impreza is now being marketed as a safe, upmarket small car more than a crazy sports car for boy-racers of all ages. Every model in the Impreza range has a 5-star ANCAP occupant safety rating - the highest available.

Unsurprisingly the ride quality has improved in the WRX, making it a much friendlier car around town. It is almost sophisticated, but it isn't in the German class quite yet. Still, what used to be a stiff ride is smoother and the car is quieter as well. Even wind noise seems reduced.

It's great value for what it offers in terms of speed and refinement. It's very fast off the mark at 5.6secs to 60mph which is up there near the best of them in this price range and it still handles well. When the turbo-charger kicks in at around 2,500 revs it gets the pulse racing. But is it as much fun as its predecessor? Not quite. But the booming sales figures suggest that people prefer it that way.
