Since it's launch in 1989 the Mazda MX5 has offered it's own variety of affordable glamour worldwide. They're a fun drive and consumers have made it the worlds top selling two seater roadster, selling over 700,000 worldwide and 67,000 in the UK. The 2005 update has seen a slightly more masculine version hit the roads in an attempt to broaden the appeal of the MX5 to people who don't work in hair and beauty.
The new MX-5 has been slightly stretched to accommodate people of 6 foot but is unlikely to be very comfortable for anyone much larger. It's gained a little extra width too to make the cabin feel a little more roomy, but the MX-5 is meant to be driven with the roof down and in this state of undress it's a delight. With the roof down conversations are still just about possible, especially if you have the side windows up. Although you may have to raise your voice if travelling at speed. The boot space is reasonable for a car of it's size and is easily big enough for a weekend's luggage for two people.
Mark three MX-5 has been given a thorough overhaul in the suspension and chassis department. Tasked with matching other cars in the class, including the Porsche Boxter the Mazda engineering team have created a very competent roadster. the suspension is a little soft which makes for a slightly uncertain ride if you're a little keen into a corner, but on the whole there are no real surprises in store when behind the wheel. The MX-5 is nippy and handles pretty well, Ok not as well as a Porsche but you never really expected it to.
The engine options are simple 1.8 and 2.0 litre petrol units both of which offer more than ample power and pull for the nimble frame. Both offer 0-60 sub 10 seconds with the 2.0 hitting 60 mph in 7.9 seconds and having a top speed of 130 mph. the gearboxes are unfussed, slick and add to the enjoyment of driving.
The MX-5 is a real pocket rocket that doesn't take itself too seriously and offers a real fun drive. It's an affordable frolic and offers performance beyond it's pricetag.
