The New Audi A6 growls into action like Gordon Ramsay woken from his slumber. From the snarling front grill you know that you are in for an exciting ride but the sleek aerodynamic body gives away the refinement that you can expect within.
Audi have made the new A6 bigger inside and with it's insistence of only fitting their cars out with top quality materials the interior is a masterpiece to behold. The leg and head room are handsome no matter where in the car you're sitting, you could fit half of the England rugby scrum in here and also have enough room in the boot for their luggage. The Audi Multi Media Interface comes as standard and is used to manage the car's communications, entertainment, ventilation, lighting and information systems (including the optional sat-nav when it's fitted). It works via a controller knob with a simple menu, as well as dedicated function buttons and is simple and easy to use
On the road the A6 is a rewarding drive with any of the three petrol engines (two V6 and one V8 unit) and a V6 diesel. They all offer decent levels of performance and the choice really comes down to whether you want race car speed and acceleration or useful fuel economy. The most prudent option is the TDI model which offers at best 46 mpg whereas the best in terms of performance is the 4.2 Quattro which reaches 155 mph with a 0-60 of 5.7 seconds but is somewhat thirsty at 23 mpg.
The Handling is confident and the steering accurate and predictable but the ride is a little sterile when compared to some of the A6's rivals. The 5-Series BMW gives a better feel for the road which makes for a better drive but that's not to say that the Audi isn't a good drive. The cabin creates an atmosphere of such luxury and pleasure that it's a pleasure to get behind the wheel. The suspension is firm but not uncomfortable and helps pilot a finely balanced machine through urban and motorway terrain with ease.
The new Audi A6 is a significant improvement and is a delight to drive but for the purist driver it may not have enough to tempt them away from the equivalent BMW or Mercedes.
