The Audi A6 Allroad is a car designed for people who like the size of a 4x4 but don't want to pretend that they're going to drive in a field. Which is somewhat ironic as they're more than capable of off road action if the need ever arose.

Inside there is acres of space for driver passengers and any pets or wildlife that you were looking to take with you, although being a high-end Audi the level of quality and detail that you're presented with will make you unlikely to want to allow muddy paws all over the place. The seats are comfortable and supportive and the suspension offers a firm, comfortable ride. It's got legroom and headroom galore and the top quality sound system means that you can have a party on the way to the party.

Engine options are limited to two diesels and a two petrol units, a 4.2 V8 and a 2.7 Turbo, oh the agony of choice. All but the one of the 2.5 TDI units will return sub 10 sec 0-60 but if you're looking for performance you'll need to opt for the 2.7 petrol powerhouse which gives you a 0-60 of 7.2 secs and top speed of 147. None are especially prudent but the V8 weighs in with a rainforest clearing 13 mpg, with today's petrol prices that's going to hurt every time you go to the pump. Unsurprisingly the TDI models return the best figures but is around the 30 mpg mark, but you don't buy a car this size for it's fuel consumption and it does offer good performance for the fuel consumed.

On the road the Allroad performs more like an estate car than a 4X4 and that makes it a very pleasant experience. The handling is relatively assured but is occasionally unsure at higher speeds. The extra hight given to the suspension to handle the off road options means that it's not as capable as the normal A6 but in most conditions this is unlikely to rear it's head. Parking is relatively easy for a big car as the visibility is good but you'll still need a decent sized space as it's a big car.

The Audi A6 Allroad offers something for drivers who want a big interior but don't want a 4X4. it will give you good off road ability if required but if you're not going off road it's a style choice over a regular estate car.
