If only everything in life was a reliable as a Volkswagen, went the advertising slogan of the late 80's. VW is a name that has long been associated with solid performance and dependable quality. The 2005 launch of the Volkswagen Fox unveiled VW's replacement to the Lupo. It's shown improvement all the way as the Fox is cheaper, uses space better and is a more fun drive than the Lupo.
The Fox offers something of a no frills interior, with a well laid out cabin and good use of the available space. It uses Paul Smith style fabrics to brighten up an otherwise functional cabin. As you'd expect the seats are comfortable and the amount leg room is a pleasant surprise. It's got enough for four adults on short and mid length journeys, but not really too much more. The Standard models are well equipped and have facilities that many rivals would class as extras.
The Fox comes with a choice of two different engines 1.2 and 1.4 petrol versions. It's a shame the diesel unit hasn't made the trip across the channel from Europe as it would have been a worthwhile addition to the list of options. Neither of the engines are blockbusters but both are nippy and enjoyable in town. The 1.2 is somewhat exposed when on the open road and feels out of it's depth on the motorway, and the 1.4 is hardly a cruiser either. They both offer the sort of economy figures that you'd hope for with 46 and 42 mpg respectively.
The handling is sure footed and precise. The power steering gives a nice light touch and offers enough feel to enjoy the drive. It's a pleasure to park and comfortable over almost any surface. There is a little body roll but only when being a little too adventurous when cornering.
All in the Fox is a great little motor that, despite being recently launched, has the feel of a car that's been around for a long time. It's among the best of an extremely competitive group of good cars.
