The Nissan Note is a clever new offering from Nissan that looks to give small MPV owners something to think about when they next want a new car. Larger than the Renault Modus, Vauxhall Meriva and other small MPVs it sits on the Nissan / Renault B platform, the same platform as the Clio and Micra.

Step into the Note and you find a pitch perfect use of space. The seats and interior space are exceptionally well laid out giving both leg and head room in spades. The rear seats slide forward if you need more boot space but with an already ample boot you will only do that in exceptional circumstances. The cabin is light and airy and offers good visibility all round. Nissan conducted a survey of MPV owners to see which of their cars features were most useful and most often used. The result is a car that is packed with useful, practical equipment that is neither complicated nor hard to use. The ride is comfortable without being soporific with seats that are both firm and giving.

The engine options range between two petrol units and a diesel. None are going to set the rear tyres alight but they do the job required. The 1.4 is the weakest of the three and offers a 0-60 just north of 13 seconds and a top speed just over 100 mph. The 1.6 petrol engine is the engine used to power one of the Micra's and offers a good level of power and performance with 110 bhp and a 10.7 seconds 0-60. Around town the 1.5 dCi diesel option performs well but is rather exposed on the motorway. The 1.6 is where the smart buyer will be spending their money.

The Note handles well in town and on the open road. The suspension takes what the road has to throw at it and still delivers the Note from corner to corner with perfect poise. The turning circle is tight which helps with parking.

All of the engines offer good MPG figures with the petrol engines offering early forties at worst and the diesel a clear winner in the mid fifties.

The Nissan Note is an enjoyable practical family car that wont tax your brain to drive or your pocket at the pump.
