The Volkswagen Golf has a formidable heritage. It has long been seen as the small family car by which others should be judged. It offers reliability and a build quality second to none in it's class. It has a widr range of models from the sensible entry level models right through to the GTI versions showing their muscle. Like Jim Morrison it has gone through a slightly portly phase but with the mark 5 it's looking lean and back to it's best.
Outside the Mark 5 looks very similar to the previous model. Alterations have been subtle and have really looked to refine what is a proven and winning formula. The car looks more focussed with slightly sharper styling and that gives a hint to what has taken place under the covers.
VW have given the Golf a thorough mechanical overhaul ranging from the new taut, supple suspension through to the power steering which offers a precise and natural feel. The steering is precise and giving, leading to an increased confidence when driving and contributing to a sensational driving experience.
The engines range from the sufficient 1.4 which is more of a taster of what you could have had than a driving sensation. The real start point should be the 1.6 FSI which offers good levels of both economy and power. The2006 launch of 1.4 TSI model offers both a turbo and supercharger to boost the power up to 170 bhp, offering a great level of acceleration and mid range power. There are decent diesel engines available which are have enough torque to tow a fuel tanker and still return good fuel figures. The GTI comes with a 2.0 Turbo engine that generates 200 bhp and will take the car 0-60 in less than seven seconds.
Inside the Golf it's hard to forget that it's a small family car as the leg and head room are both so generous. The seats are comfortable yet not overly so; it feels as if the car wants you to be paying attention. The cabin offers a good level of vision to both driver and passengers alike and aside from the slightly noisy engines the ride is comfortable although not excessively so.
The VW Golf is still probably the best quality small family car, but has been overtaken on the inside by the Focus. It still struggles to warrant the extra money required to buy one and with so many good cars pitching for the same spot that may prove costly.
