The efforts that they put into building on the success of the original Zafira, showed how seriously Vauxhall viewed the MPV market. Launched in 1999, the Zafira was the class leader, offering great amounts of room but sharing it's chassis with the Astra. It retains an easy drive that was little different from that of a family saloon. The use of space was very inventive with seats that fold flat to offer great amounts of room if required.
The 2005 update has held on to many of these winning features. Building on the solid foundations that the early versions offered, but has added nice touches like roof storage boxes and headlamps that move with the steering, (a touch borrowed from the classic Citroen DS range).
There is a good level of choice when it comes to the engines with 1.6, 2.0T and 2.2 petrol engines, as well as two different versions of the 1.9 CDTI diesels. Offering 120 and 150 BHP they'll happily power you and the family to your destination. The diesel engines offer the most grunt and is the best performer with a full load of passengers, but the bigger petrol engines are not slouches by any means. The 2.0T SRI model reaching 140 MPH while offering 0-60 in 8.4 seconds. Other drivers will be surprised if they compete with the Zafira at traffic lights as may find themselves floundering.
If you opt for the 'Panoramic Roof' you'll be treated to soft-top levels of light and a roomy feel, without having to contend with the English weather. The seats are comfortable, although the back row are a little compromised on head room. There are a wide range of extras depending upon which model you opt for but it's worth making sure you go for one with air con as they can get a bit stuffy in the summer.
The Zafira is still among the top of the MPV pile, it certainly offers the best drive but with so many other options available it will be a hard position to maintain.
