The Nissan Micra was first launched in 1984 and was always an easy car to drive, hence it being a driving school favourite from day one. My driving instructor had one and i thought driving it was a breeze (especially compared to my Hillman Avenger). It was never too quick but always quick enough. The controls were light and the steering responsive, and to cap it all it stopped on a sixpence, or it certainly seemed to.
The 2003 edition is a long way from the mark one that first graced the nations streets but the fundamentals are the same. The Micra offers reliable easy driving around town and a steady ride for longer journeys, although the 1.0 litre is somewhat lacklustre on the open road.
The engines come in 1, 1.2 and 1.4 litre petrol versions and two 1.5 litre diesel units. The 1 litre petrol version was mercifully droppped in 2005 to leave 4 units that can perform adequetly. That's really what the Micra is all about offering easy performance without stretching the driver. All return good fuel economy with the diesel capable of reaching 60 mpg.
Inside the car is clean, functional and suprisingly roomy. It has a very clever sliding back seat that can afford extra leg room or boot space as required.
The Nissan Micra has been a consistent if not stellar performer for many years now and that, like the car itself, looks like it will run for years to come.
