The Nissan Qashqai looks to bridge a gap between the family hatchback and SUV market. This looks like a very astute move as there are no real direct competitors. In family hatchbacks you have a class in decline and with SUVs you have an area of growth. This offers something with the appeal of an SUV and the practicality and emissions figures of a family hatchback.
There are essentially four different engines available for Qashqai drivers; 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrol engines and 1.5 turbo and 2.0 litre diesel engines. All offer a lively performance with the 2.0 diesel really the pick of the bunch. It's an engine that Nissan shares with Renault for their Laguna range, the 1.5 turbo diesel was developed in conjunction with Renault.
While unable to offer the same quality of ride that you'd expect from the Focus of Golf the Qashqai does offer a decent handling car. It's height gives the impression that it's going to lean around the corners but this isn't the case. It's low centre of gravity and independent suspension offer a sure and steady ride. There is a good level of driver involvement and great level of fun with each outing.
The Nissan Qashqai offers a choice of something a bit different to people looking for a small family car and is worth a test drive before you go to any other showrooms.
