The Fiat Punto has been one of the most popular choices among supermini buyers since it's launch in 1994. Having been updated several times between than and 2003 it's no surprise that the most recent incarnation offers comfortable, economical motoring. There have been reliability issues although many of the complaints arise from the disinterest of the dealers when called upon to deal with a problem.
On the road the car is a fun to drive, although unless you have a diesel engine version you may soon tire from the lack of zip. The petrol engine has the option of the 7 gear dualogic transmission which offers a Jekyll and Hyde gearbox that you can have in either easy Automatic mode or frantic Manual shift. The Petrol engines are nippy without being powerful with a wide range of 1.2 and 1.3 units available. Either way the 100 bhp Multijet diesel represents the best option, the extra power and torque engender a real sense of confidence.
The handling is competent without being excellent. It offers a good level of comfort and surprising amount of room for a small car.
The Launch of the Punto Grande has seen the Fiat city car torch pass over to the new bigger version but the Punto has been instrumental in getting to the point that the grande has taken off from and still offers good small car motoring.
