The Focus C-Max takes on some formidable opponents in the Vauxhall Zafira, Citroen Xsara Picasso and Renault Scenic and in some respects beats them. However in it's main function, to be a people carrier it comes a disappointing fourth as it only has five seats, not the seven that the others boast. In this respect it's not entirely sure what it wants to be and could easliy be categorised as an estate.
The C-Max was the first compact MPV to really handle like a car. It offers an agile drive on country lanes while being comfortable on the motorway and agile in town. The ESP system keeps the front wheel drive delivering power to the front wheels in a steady and usable manner.
As with all of Ford's range there are a wide range of engines to suit most tastes, althought there's not much to get fired up over. The best fuel consumption is 58 mpg and the best 0-62 is a respectable 9.3 seconds.
All in all you're left with the feel that Ford wanted to havd a shoe in the compact MPV market but without wanting to gamble the sales of the Galaxy on it. The Focus S-Max lacks the seat capacity of its rivals and is really little more than a Focus Estate.
