The Jaguar X-Type is Jaguar's entry in the Compact Executive Market.  They are showing how seriously they take the market by offering this excellent and useable estate car.  Like the other models in the range it’s keenly priced and is looking to offer an alternative to the German monarchy.   The X-Type Estate is refined and nicely put together.  Handling is, as with the saloon excellent, with a focussed and natural ride.  As you’re sat in the drivers seat it’s easy to forget that you’re driving an estate car, so compact is the handling.  Despite it’s extra size the Estate car feels a touch cramped in the rear seats, both below the knee and above the hip.  The bit in between is catered for nicely, but that doesn’t help get a comfortable journey in the back seats.  The wind and road noise is nicely suppressed and as long as you’re sat in the front you’ll be treated to a lovely ride.  Boot space is good and with the seats folded you’re treated to ample storage space.   Engine options offer different levels of good driving.  The entry level 2.0 V6 petrol is tough and willing, with sub 10 second sprint to 60 mph and top end of 128 mph.  The fun is found further up the range with the 3.0L model which can get to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds, although at 26 mpg it’s not especially prudent when getting to that point.  The 2.5L petrol engine gives a halfway house option between the two.  There are two diesel options 2.0L and 2.2L,  the bigger engine is the best performer and at 8.9 and 134 mph it’s vital stats are a second and 10 mph better than it’s little brother and at 45 mpg is only 3 mpg more costly for the performance.   The X-Type Estate offers a good motor with a decent range of engine options.  It’s not going to worry the continental establishment too much, but if you want a bit of British motoring heritage you’ll get a good performer thrown in too.
