The really surprising thing about a car that looks like a slightly beefed up version of the Volvo V70 estate car is that it's so capable off road. The XC70 is effectively the company's popular V70 estate car with increased ground clearance and an automatic four-wheel drive system that normally powers only the front wheels, but is capable of sending power to the rear wheels if required.

As you walk round the XC70 it looks like a slightly taller Volvo Estate car, with rough tread tyres. There is additional clearance between the wheel arch and the tyres in order to give enhanced off road capabilities, but little else to distinguish it from the V70.

The XC70 feels like a regular estate car when on the road, certainly a lot more like a conventional car than on of the current crop of 4X4s. The raised suspension is extremely effective in giving additional clearance, while maintaining a decent cornering and a comfortable ride. The XC70 actually offers greater ground clearance than many of it's rivals and the all wheel drive system is very effective at keeping the car moving. The system usually drives the front wheels, but when sensors detect the front wheels slipping, drive is also sent to the rear wheels, giving the added push as needed.

There are two engine options a 185bhp 2.4-litre five-cylinder turbo diesel. It generates 295lb-ft of torque from 2000-2750rpm. The manual version will get from 0-60mph in 8.8 seconds (auto: 9.4 seconds) and has a top speed of 134mph. The petrol option is a six cylinder 3.2L, which has an automatic gearbox. It will go from standing to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds and tops out 134 mph. In terms of economy the diesel is the only choice with 38 mpg from the manual box, as opposed to 24 mpg from the petrol option.

The interior of the XC70 is, as with many other Volvos, extremely well finished and comfortable. There is great leg and head room for the front and back seats. Vision throughout the cabin is good and there are nice options available such as the 'Clean Zone Interior Package', which has been recommended by the Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association. When the car is unlocked using the remote, the passenger compartment is automatically ventilated for about a minute.

The XC70 offers real off road ability without looking like you're driving an irresponsible gas guzzler. They are the sensible choice for those who want to actually drive off road, rather than just look like a poser at the school gates.
