Volkswagen Jetta Saloon 2006 - Present

The rebirth of the VW Jetta is more an attempt to give the Bora an identity, than resurrect the old model. With the Bora, VW hadn't quite got it right and they're looking to do better with the Jetta. It looks like they've certainly had a good goat it, the Jetta comes with a great range of engine options and a high quality finish.

As you look at the Jetta you cannot help but be seduced by it's sleek good looks. On the outside the shapes and dimensions are both practical and attractive. The Jetta is surprisingly accommodating, and can seat five adults with comfort. Seats offer good support and should be comfortable for long journeys. Air conditioning and four electric windows are standard across the range and the finish is of the highest quality.

The Jetta shares it's engine range with the Passat, so there is an assurance of quality to start off with. Petrol models start with a 115bhp 1.6 FSI engine, with 150bhp 2.0 FSI and 200bhp turbo FSI (the same engine as in the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Skoda Octavia vRS) offering higher performance. Diesel options are a 105bhp 1.9 TDI or a 140bhp 2.0TDI. Both petrol and diesel entry level engines offer adequate acceleration, both managing to sprint from 0-62mph in less than 12 seconds. 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines feel rather sportier. Some of the diesel units offer really eye catching economy, with the 1.9 TDI returning 61mpg.

The Jetta shares many of its components with the Golf and benefits from similar handling characteristics. It feels surefooted on demanding roads, with plenty of grip and a composed ride. Steering lacks a little in terms of feel, but is precise and varies in weight according to vehicle speed: heavier on the move and light when at slow speeds. An electronic stability control system is standard across the range.

The Jetta makes a welcome return to the UK streets and does so with a real touch of quality and great finish.
