Volkswagen's Eos is a car that wasn't made to fit a space in the market but makes it's own space. It sits in the space that would be occupied by the Golf soft top (if there was one), and as such competes with the drop top Renault Megane, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. The fact that VW have given the car class enough attention to put a specific car out makes owning one that bit more special.
The Eos looks extremely stylish, this is in part due to the new folding roof. Made from steel and glass the hardtop roof has a built in sunroof with the roof up, and obviously no roof when down. The result of this is a cabin that feels light and airy at all times, but with a solid, hard top feel with the roof up. As we've come to expect from VW, the build quality is excellent, with good quality materials used throughout the cabin. The seats are comfortable and offer great levels of leg and head room no matter where you sit in the cabin. Standard equipment levels are generous.
All models come with stability control, Semi-automatic air conditioning, twin front and combined curtain and side airbags for front and rear passengers and front foglights. electric windows, parking sensors, 16-inch alloys and heated seats are also standard fit. There are optional; colour-screen satnav and 18-inch polished alloys. In-keeping with the time, the Eos is also iPod and MP3 compatible.
The Eos comes equipped with good engine options, but never really feels that fast. This is largely down to the fact that it's a heavy car. Weighing in at 1469KG it's a full 100kg heavier than the Passat. This also does effect the cars handling and makes the Eos somewhat reluctant to change direction at anything approaching high speed. There are a number of engine options. The 2.0 TDI unit offer the best mix of power and economy, with 0 - 60 coming a shade over ten seconds and a top speed of 126 mph - while returning 47 mpg. If you're less concerned with economy and the green credentials and cost of running the car the 3.2 V6 is the most lively with a 0 - 60 of 7.1 seconds and top speed of 153 mph. the 2.0 T FSI petrol option is a decent performer too, with 7.6 seconds and 144 mph.
The Eos is yet to really be embraced by the road going public but that exclusivity is another reason to get one. They are a handsome car that turns heads as you drive, if that's what you want then you should definitely consider it.
