Volkswagen are most famous for two vehicles, the Beetle and the Camper van. In the 60s and 70s the Camper van was the only thing for anyone who wanted to get away at the drop of a hat. The Caravelle is the latest offering from Volkswagen and it offers noughties comfort and finish, while still retaining a somewhat rustic feel.

The Caravelle is an amply sized vehicle. There is really no pretending otherwise, but as it offers seating for seven people to travel with comfort all round it was never going to be any different. The seats are each individual and can be moved and adjusted in a multitude of ways. They can be turned in different directions to face one another or, if required, all face the same way. The bench seat can even be folded into a double bed, if the mood takes. The Driving position is comfortable and eminently adjustable, if a little van like for some.

The Caravelle comes with a range of sensible engines; three diesel and one petrol unit. Kicking off the range is the 1.9 TDI PD (109bhp). You're never going to leave anyone at the lights with it's 0 - 60 time in 18.4 seconds, but you don't buy a Caravelle because it's rampant acceleration and power. That said, the bigger engines are an improvement with the 2.5 TDI coming in two levels of tune 130 bhp and 174 bhp. Their 0 - 60 times are 15.3 and 12.2 seconds respectively. The petrol engine is the most powerful but also thirsty at 21 mpg. Bear in mind that with figures quoted for the combined cycle you are unlikely to get those figures without regular run outs on the motorway.

The handling of the Caravelle is pretty good for it's size. The suspension is a little rough and ready but on the whole does offer a good balance of handling and comfort.

The Caravelle offers a nice level of detail and equipment within. Whether it's got a home in the new millennium is another matter. There will be some that love it and there will be some that think they'd rather get a family car and spend the difference on a hotel.
