One of the more characterful of the current crop of city cars, the funky C2 combines distinctive design with a fairly fun driving experience. The interior is stylish but while there's plenty of room up front, adult passengers in the rear won't be comfortable for long.

It's a fun and nippy city car, perfect for dashing around town, but not so good for longer journeys when the noise and ride will take their toll on both the passengers and driver.

The entry level is a 1.1 litre petrol engine which is lacklustre, while the1.4 is zippy but loud when cold. At the top of the range the 1.6 litre VTS is a real pocket rocket, but the 1.6 VTR, which is fitted with a dreadful, lurch-prone "Sensodrive" semi-automatic gearbox is awful, with a bumpy, jumpy transmission. The 1.4 litre diesel is loud but efficient.

Trim levels range from the rather basic entry-level L with no CD player or electric windows up to the well equipped SX with the 1.4 petrol engine. All have a trip computer, remote central locking and variable-rate power steering to make lighter work of in-town driving. Air-con is standard on the SX, optional on the Furio, but unavailable on L. Automatic headlamps and wipers, cruise control and leather seats are optional.

It's up there with the best in its class but we still prefer the Toyota Yaris. It may not have the image but it's a better all-rounder for the money, and has that Toyota reliability.

With prices from £10,995 to £13595 there's a big range to choose from, but the Yaris provides more value and arguably a better all-round package. However you might be prepared to pay the premium for the funky Citroen looks.
