Developed from the Citroen AX the Peugeot 106 also shared a lot with the Citroen Saxo and for it’s time was a great little supermini. It was a reliable and well made, offered lots of miles for the money, and it now makes a good used purchase.
If you wanted to criticise the 106 it’s looks would be the first place you’d wade in, it looks like the person in class who wouldn’t ever speak up. There’s nothing about the 106v that shouts anything either parked of on the road. Silence is not what you’re likely to get from the occupants of the cramped rear seats, moaning is much more likely as the levels of room are pretty poor, this in turn effects the space in the front as the lucky front seat passenger will have to cramp themselves forward to offer space in the rear. The boot space was reasonable, although not overly generous.
When driving the 106 there was a nice wide range of engines on offer. Varying between the frugal 1.0L unit to the genuinely quick 1.6 GTi, which could get to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, which was in incredible 10 (yes ten), seconds faster than the miserly 1.0L option. There was a good choice of diesel engines which offered the best mix of economy and performance, with fifty plus miles per gallon available from a few, although for any decent performance you’re gonna want the GTi.
The 106 has aged quite a bit over the years, but haven’t we all. There are still some good examples to be found but few that will provide many people with a talking point.
