Mini Mini Convertible 2004 - Present

When I first heard that BMW were remaking the Mini, I despaired. I happily apologise for my scepticism because the BMW Mini manages to replicate the refinement of a BMW and the character and fun of the old mini something I had thought was impossible.

All models are fun but the Cooper S is the only option if you want some serious poke. The cabin is funky and spacious with plenty of headroom even for six-footers, although room in the back is severely limited, kids and short people only for long journeys. Visibility is excellent.

What really impresses is the glue-like handling, so reminiscent of the classic minis. You can throw it around corners and it just refuses to skid.

All versions have remote central locking, electric front windows, door mirrors and a CD player, but alloy wheels cost extra for entry-level One models and air-conditioning is a pricey option.
The interior finish is classy, very BMW in its attention to detail.

As you'd expect the roof folded down into the boot makes an already limited space even more cramped, but you don't buy a Mini for it's carrying ability! The rear seats are also slightly compromised too, kids only in the back unless the front passengers are happy to have their seats well forward.

The 2008 models will reportedly offer all-wheel drive, originally designed for the extended-wheelbase clubman model, but extended to all models for the 2008/9 range.

Its not the fastest car on the road but for fun and style its hard to beat. And it holds its money well too. Its got bags more charisma than any other supermini so if you don't mind shelling out around £20,000 and forking out a fortune on extras, you won't be disappointed. But if its purely value you're after, you're probably best looking to Toyota's Yaris, the Ford Fiesta or even Suzuki Swift, where there's bags more value for money.
