BMW have shown no arrogance or notion of resting on their laurels over the past few years and they seem well aware that their competition are making great progress towards their status as top dogs in the Executive car markets. They have put modern technologies and weight saving materials to great use giving good payback in fuel and therefore tax savings, both company car and road tax. They have managed to get these efficiencies without any compromise on either the performance or the handling. The 5-Series has matured into a class leading model with strong resale demand and therefore values.
The 5-Series is a handsome car, it doesn't look the most naturally evolved of the BMW range but it exudes refinement and quality. The same quality finish is found throughout the cabin with extremely comfortable throughout. Leg and head room are good throughout the cabin. The suspension is set to offer a great combination of comfort and handling. This is in part helped by the superb weight distribution and balance.
The 5-Series comes with a range of superb six or eight cylinder engines. They all benefit from BMW's latest high-precision direct fuel injection system which improve fuel consumption and emissions. Their new technologies enable more efficient burning of fuel in the combustion chamber, so they're not just leaner and cleaner, they also produce more power and/or torque. Their 0-62mph times are all improved it seems they have found a way to have their bratwurst and eat it. The bottom of the range 520d will get from standing to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds, with a top speed of 139mph. moving up the range there are a lots of great engines galore. The 550i will get to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and is restricted to 155 mph at the top end. The fuel economy is a disappointing 25mpg (although not surprising). If you're looking at a combination of fun with the decent economy the best bet is the 535d which will sprint to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and being restricted to 155mph always feels like it's got plenty more to give. It still returns 42 mpg and with 178 g/km emissions it falls into car tax band E. there are few cars that can boast performance and efficiency figure to match the 535d.
The handing is trademark BMW with the traditional rear wheel drive system and the great balance gives the 5-Series a running start. The steering is natural and features a new electric power steering system, which recently made its debut on the second-generation X5. It's an on-demand system, so the pump doesn't work unless you're turning. When it does work It works just fine: never too light, but providing unobtrusive assistance when you need it, feeling as natural as unaided steering.
BMW have, with the new 5-Series come up with a car for all seasons. It's refined and luxurious as well as a fast and satisfying drive. Managing this with great economy figures shows that the Bavarian Motor giants are still on top form.
