The E-Class is Mercedes conventional executive saloon. Up against the 5-Series, A6 and Lexus it’s a good performer, albeit a costly one – priced at the top of that particular foursome. Early models suffered with an over ambitious technical system, but those problems are behind the German motoring giant now and their dealership were always able to give good service in between anyway. The E-Class is the epitome of business class travel. It looks refined as it site by the kerb, stately but with a keen sense of purpose. The lean looks combined with substance make the E-Class look like the sort of vehicle that could be used to drive foreign dignitaries around a city, or a fast paced family round the South Circular. Inside the E-Class occupants are confronted with customary Mercedes fittings and great seating. The seats are comfortable and supportive. They manage to offer decent comfort with a supple, taught feel. The levels of head and leg room are good throughout the interior space with ample room for three adults in the back seats. On the road you can instantly feel the investment that Mercedes have put into their cars over the last decade. The engine options are numerous and they all perform well. The only models with a 0 -60 time over 10 seconds are 2.2L auto diesel units, and they deliver 41 mpg. The 2.8L petrol engine offers lively performance with 0 -60 in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 154 mph and 30 mpg fuel figures. The five litre unit is downright scarily fast but does it at 24 mpg. The diesels offer punchy performance with grit and guile aplenty. With maximum torque delivered early the E280 CDI offers 0 – 60 in 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph all while returning 39 mpg. The 320 CDI manages vital stats of 6.6 seconds and 155 mph, while only offering one mile less per gallon with 38 mpg. The E-Class has class under the bonnet throughout the range.
If you are looking for a new compact executive motor the E-Class is likely to be on the list of options. The extras can be expensive but this may be good bargaining room, but throughout the range the feel of quality shines through.
