Citroen's C2 VTS fills the surprisingly large hole left by the demise of the Saxo VTS, the nearest Citroen come to a hot hatch. Not necessarily a boy racer favourite the Saxo offered decent performance and the C2 continues that form. The C2 is a real pocket rocket. It looks great (not large or immense), and powers through country lanes like a chainsaw through a field of wheat.

There's one engine on offer a 1.6 petrol unit. The little power house generates 125 bhp and a offers a top speed of 126 mph. sixty mph comes up in 8.3 seconds which is fast enough, and really in the cockpit it seems to come up earlier. Improvements to the steering and suspension have an effect that could be described as greater than the sum of their parts. The uprated steering rack gives you the chance to guide the car with laser precision and still feel the mechanics of the road. The VTS remains lithe as you dance from corner to corner, powering up the straights in between.

Inside the VTS offers the sort of room that you'd expect from a supermini. The front seats are reasonably comfortable, although they could do with being a bit more firm. The back seats offer little by way of legroom but are certainly more than adequate for children. There is a decent sound system, which not doubt will be upgraded by many of the buyers, for something that shakes the rear windscreen.

The VTS has a small but slightly muscular look about it that will appeal to some. It drives nicely and comes at a reasonable cost. If you're looking for pocket sized fun you could do a lot worse.
