The 6 Series BMW is an impressive combination of sophistication and opulent looks. It offers all anyone could ask from a big coupe, with a huge bonnet that is that long because it's got a big engine under it. it's happy piling on those motorway miles or twisting round country lanes. The demand for them means that you're unlikely to find any bargains on the used car market.
Approaching the 6-Series you can't help but think of it as the ultimate phallic symbol. It's long and the entire car looks to be designed to thrust to the front of the bonnet. As you open the door you're struck with the realisation that you're really driving a huge two seat coupe. Yes there are seats at the back but even children will struggle to find enough room back there, adults shouldn't even try to climb in. The seats are comfortable and designed to complement the driving perfectly. They keep you in just the right space to really enjoy the drive and in control. The balance of the car is the customary BMW weight distribution with a 50/50 split front to back.
Sitting in the driver's seat it seems like quite a way to see the end of the bonnet but once you're in motion the whole car makes perfect sense. It's never been offered with anything but a dynamite engine. initially there was only one option and what an option the 4.4 V8 offering 333 bhp and 0 - 60 in 5.6 seconds, restricted to a very mundane 155 mph. with power delivery throughout the rev range it offered fun and easy miles on demand. 2004 saw the introduction of the 3.0 V6, which while not quite as much fun as the 4.4 it's still no slouch. 2005 saw the 4.8 V8 replace the 4.4, which offered similar performance to the 4.4, albeit slightly more smooth and flexible (yes that is knit picking). Late 2007 saw the introduction of an oil burner, the 635d; boasting 0 - 60 in 6.1 seconds and another restricted 155 mpg while only using 40 mpg.
The boot space is limited so those touring holidays will have to be packed carefully, maybe pile the clothes on the back seats. But when you're behind
