Launched in 2004 the 1 series was BMW's first foray into the Small family car market. In competition with the UK's favourite - the Ford Focus and the stalwart Golf it entered arguably the UKs toughest car class.
The 1 series has a choice of six engines, four petrol and two diesel. All offer both great power and stunning economy figures. The 130i model will reach 155 mph and still offers 34 mpg while the 118d returns 62 mpg while affording you a top speed of 125 mph.
As you'd expect from a BMW it drives like it's on rails. The balance of the car is superb offering assured cornering and an engaging drive that you always feel part of. It gently draws you into the ride in a way that makes you forget that you're travelling somewhere and leaves you slightly disappointed that you've arrived and have to stop driving.
There are many great cars in the small family class but few that are as rewarding to drive. You can do it with a clear conscience as it's economy figures are so great, it's like having your cake and eating it too. Badge may be enough to poach a few Focus drivers, but i don't think Ford will be too worried.
