The Alfa 166 is another Executive Saloon from the Italian alternative. Like the rest of the range it's a great drive and quite well put together, although some of the build quality lacks a little when compared to it's rivals, although the 166 is almost certainly cheaper to drive out of the showroom in. There are issues with space, mainly in the back but the front is hardly generous.

The 166 looks like an Alfa, slightly bigger than the 156 but a similar shape. Inside the car the finish is reasonable if not exceptional. The seats are a little snug but that tends to focus the drivers attention on the job in hand, namely driving. And it is in driving that Alfa owners will derive their pleasure. The engine options start with the excellent 155bhp 2.0L Twin Spark. This model offers great entry level motoring, but does need quite a lot of driver input. Most buyers will prefer the potent V6 engines of which there are there are three to choose from. Starting with the 190bhp 2.5-litre, followed by a 220bhp 3.0-litre version. The top of the range car is the superb 3.2-litre V6 with 240bhp that was introduced from late 2003. Going from standstill to 60 mpg in 7.4 seconds with a top speed of 152 mph. The 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre cars get a five-speed manual gearbox while the more powerful engines have the smooth and satisfying six-ratio gearbox. The performance figures leave Alfa trailing the likes of BMW's 3-series but not by much.

The handling of the Alfa is excellent and the drive it offers owners extremely satisfying. Suspension delivers a good balance between handling and comfort and the 166 always leave the driver feeling that they are in control. The front wheel drive system offers a rear wheel drive feel, while retaining the poise of a front wheel drive car.

A good cruiser, the 166 offers an uncommonly large boot (for an Alfa), which is ample for all but the biggest loads. The engine noise while on the open road is a delight to behold.

The 166 is a decent alternative to the mainstream for those who like to work at their motoring. The engines are good throughout the range although you'll want to keep your service history up to date.
