Aiming for class-leading quality, no doubt using the learning of their Lexus division, the 2003 Avensis represents considerable leap forward over the original model. The interior feels luxurious and the Avensis is a comfortable drive. The Avensis should also prove to be reliable, but does not offer such an engaging drive as the Ford Mondeo, Mazda 6 or Peugeot 407.
The Toyota will accommodate five adults with decent leg and shoulder room, although rear headroom is a little tight for people approaching six-feet tall. Air conditioning comes as standard across the range as do electric front windows. Noise levels are kept low by the quality of the finish.
Boot space is ample and useable with a minimum of 510 litres of luggage space available in the hatchback, which should be more than enough for most people. The rear seats split and fold (although not quite flat) and the cabin boasts several good sized, useful storage areas.
Handling in the Avensis is both safe and predictable. The rear suspension is derived from the Celica, but it drives far more like a family car than a sports car. The Avensis turns in confidently with little body roll, but the power steering gives a rather artificial feel to it, offering little feedback. Ride comfort is good and the Avensis is a great long-distance car, really taking on those motorway miles with ease.
The entry-level 1.8-litre petrol is both flexible and frugal. The 2.0-litre petrol engine while quicker on paper, doesn't really feel a great deal faster on the road. Fuel figures are reasonable at 39 and 34 mpg respectively. The D-4D diesel engines are a better option with the 2.2 option the best of the bunch with 9.0 second 0 - 60 and 130 mph top speed but still returning 47 mpg in fuel economy.
All models come with Air conditioning as standard and have options such as electronic climate control, electric rear windows, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and rain-sensing windscreen wipers, if you upgrade.
The Avensis offers a touch of luxury but manages to keep the costs within reach of the masses
