The C3 is Citroen's replacement for the Saxo and it's quirky looks and slightly larger size have made it one of the French Manufacturers most popular models. Citroen's remarkable pricing schemes have no doubt helped with the little five door's popularity.
Inside the cabin one is immediately struck with high the roof is. This is of course all relative but for a supermini there is a very pleasant amount of headroom. The seats are comfortable if a little soft over long journeys. Rear seats are not quite as roomy but still offer ample space for two adults or three children. The ride is made comfortable by the excellent suspension .
The engine options are all capable and economical although the starter model, the 1.1, is a little out of it's depth when taken on the motorway. The best choice of engine is probably represented by the 1.4 HDI which is a tough little unit and extremely economical, with fuel returns of 65 mpg. The 1.4 SX model features Stop & Start technology, which switches off the engine when the car is stopped and adds to the fuel economy. None of the range is going to appeal to boy racers as there's no outstanding performer but they offer sold, economical motoring.
On the road the steering is precise and easy. The electronic power assistance unfortunately removes much of the feel of the road but that aside the C3 is a nice car to drive. Despite being a supermini the C3 is quite heavy and uses that weight to great effect on the road. The focus of that bulk feels directed to the front wheels with the express purpose of gripping the road which is does in a natural and efficient manner. The brakes are sharp and will pull the car to a halt with ease.
The Citroen C3 isn't necessarily the first choice when thinking about a supermini but Citroens rarely are. They tend to go about their business with a workman like efficiency and offer great deals that turn peoples heads. You have to ask yourself why not?
