In any update of a popular model the manufacturer runs the risk of unnecessarily updating the car to it's detriment. This is currently not something that the boffins in R and D at Ford can be accused of, as they keep on producing cars that get better and better. The 2007 Mondeo is a shining example. It was the class leader but the 2007 update has seen improvements in many areas and a price reduction too. It's like going on a date with Lindsay Lohan and her insisting on picking up the tab!

The Mondeo has a reputation for comfort and the new model is no exception. In terms of physical size It's grown a little for the current update and this has naturally added to the levels of comfort on offer. The middle seat in the rear of the car probably wont leave an adult feeling too refreshed after a long journey, but which car's would? The suspension delivers comfort in spades and offers all of the occupants a supple and smooth ride. All of the models come with great levels of equipment and finish. Air conditioning comes as standard.

Driving the Mondeo is one of the many reasons to get one. That sounds like an obvious statement, but when you've got a car that's as good value and practical as the Mondeo it's worth remembering, as there are so many other reasons that you could buy one. Behind the wheel you're treated to levels of performance and handling that you'd expect from significantly more expensive cars. The weight distribution is really only bettered by BMW and this gives the Mondeo great road presence and precise steering, and handling. The controls are laid out as if they are the result of evolution, rather than design.

The Engine options offer a reasonable level of choice with 3 different sizes of petrol options and two diesel but different levels of tuning within. The entry level 1.6 offers reasonable levels of performance but if you've tried one of the diesel options you'll probably stay there. The 2.0 TDCi offers sub ten second 0-60 times and 130 mph top speed while returning 47 mpg. The 2.5 turbo engine is a super-tough workhorse of an engine. You can virtually keep it in third for the whole trip to the shops as it's low down grunt will pull from such low revs. It tops out at 150 mph so if you're on the Autobahn you'll be able to make swift progress the theme of your European trip.

Boot space is generous, as you'd expect from a large family car that has just got bigger. The seats fold down easily and extremely practically to add to storage capacity if required.

Ford has been on something of a roll for the best part of the last decade and the Mondeo looks like it's keen to not only ride that wave but score heavily by doing so with style.
