The Audi A3 has been a consistent performer in the small family car market for many years and in that time has seen a number of updates and new versions come through. It's always been at the pricier end of the market but Audi have never sold themselves on their price but their quality and build, but with the improvements made by other manufacturers build does the Audi warrant the extra money?

As you get into the car you're immediately struck by the dashboard and switchgear. It's unfussy and brilliantly laid out with everything working as you'd expect it to. Nothing complicated, nothing trying to look flash, just simple uncluttered controls in a red LED that means business. The cabin offers comfort and room both front and rear with good levels of leg and head room for those travelling in the front and the back.

When you turn the key you're greeted with the purr of an engine that sounds quiet and reserved but has an edge. Once driving you know that the car will respond to what you want it to do, but has the power to make you careful what you wish for. Leaving the 1.6 aside owing to it's limitations we can concentrate on the 1.8 Turbo and the 1.9 TDI.

Both engines offer good levels of performance and fun. The power is delivered evenly across the rev range and offers no surprises merely a good level of pull and power throughout, the automatic and manual gearboxes offer slick, easy transmission and add to the driving experience. The DSG (double shift gearbox) offers all the benefits of an automatic, with smooth gearshifts, plus the fuel economy of a manual if desired.

On the road the handling is tight and assured. The A3 relishes cornering and holds onto the road like a dog with a bone. The suspension is firm but giving if need be and holds the car with poise as you travel between corners. The steering is something of a let down with a slightly vague feel and lack of road sensation. From this point of view you don't get the driving sensation that is offered by some of it's rivals, like the Ford Focus or the VW Golf.

The Audi A3 is a great car and is fun to drive, looks great and will cater for any small families needs, but it's not the cheaper end of the market and it's a competitive place with lots a great cars on offer. It's all going to come down to personal preference.
