K1 NGS - £231,000

This regal number was sold in 1993, a British record holder for twentv years. The buyer opted to remain anonymous but with this purchase seems to have started the current boom in prestigious plates.

GS 1 - £258,775

GS 1 was sold at an auction in Perth, Scotland, the original issuing authority, on July 22nd 2005. Once again, the buyer wanted to remain unnamed but one thing is certain - he wanted the plate. The pre-auction estimates for the plate was a mere £80,000 - £100,000.

51 NGH - £254,000

This plate was sold at auction in 2006 to an undisclosed Sikh buyer. 'Singh' is a among the most popular surname in the Sikh community. As a result there was a lot of interest and the bidding went beyond expectation.

VIP 1 - £285,000

This was bought by Chelsea Football Club oligarch Roman Abramovich in 2006. Probably with spare cash from the sale of toilet-seat thief Glen Johnson. The plate was once used on the Popemobile for Pope John Paul II's papal visit to Ireland.

M 1 - £331,500

Mobile phone entrepreneur Mike McCoomb from Liverpool purchased the plate for his eleven-year-old son who of course is unable to drive. A good look to go with his L-plates.

F1 – 440,625

The most expensive plate sold in the UK went in January 2008 to Afzal Kahn from Bradford. It sits on the front of his Mercedes McLaren SLR. The car itself is worth £360,000 and was listed as the second most expensive second-hand car by MSN. A nice £800,000 total package.

5 - £3.5 million

The plate was bought by Businessman Talal Khouri. When asked if the number 5 held any special meaning for him he said the plate had absolutely no significance to him whatsoever. What a mentalist.

1 - £7 million

It was auctioned for charity in the United Arab Emirates, The winning bidder Saeed Khouri said he bought it because he "wants to be the best in the world". Saeed, member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family, added "I bought it because it's the best number." Twat.
